How to Install Laminate Flooring on a Wall
Plan Your Layout
Decide on the pattern or direction of the laminate planks. You can install it horizontally or vertically. Measure the wall and estimate the number of planks you need. Add 10% to account for cutting mistakes.
Gather your Tools and Materials
You will need a hammer, tapping block, pull bar, caulking gun, utility knife, stud finder, tape measure, pencil, saw, level, pry bar, 18-gauge brad nail gun, screw gun, and personal safety equipment.
For the materials, you will need the following:
- laminate flooring
- brad nails (38 mm-44 mm)
- drywall screws (38 mm-44 mm)
- 100% clear silicon adhesive caulk
- wall base and quarter-round mouldings
Prepare the Wall
Check if the wall is flat and correct any unevenness before starting. Remove skirting boards or trims from the wall with a pry bar. Clean the wall thoroughly and make sure it’s dry and even.
If working around outlets or switches, turn off the power to that area.
Acclimate the Planks
Place the unopened laminate flooring boxes in the area where they will be installed 48 hours before installation.
Attach the Flooring on the Wall Horizontally
Follow these steps if installing horizontally.
- Locate and mark the wall studs.
- Measure and lay out the first row of planks without fastening them to ensure a proper fit.
- Apply adhesive caulk to the back of each plank.
- Starting from the bottom, press the planks onto the wall, ensuring they lock together and align properly.
- Use a nail gun to secure the planks to the wall studs.
- Add the next rows, ensuring they interlock and remain level.
- You may need to cut the planks to fit the top row.
Attach the Flooring on the Wall Vertically
This method of installation works best for creating wainscoting. Follow these steps for installing the laminate flooring vertically.
- Determine the number of planks you need for the wall. If you can’t fit whole planks exactly and need to cut them, ensure the first and last planks are the same width for the best appearance.
- Measure a distance up the wall equal to the length of the laminate plank plus 2.5 centimetres. Mark this with a chalk line.
- Locate and mark the wall studs.
- If using a whole plank for the first column, saw off the long side groove that would be against the edge of the wall.
- Apply silicone adhesive in an S pattern to the back of the laminate plank.
- Starting from the left, press the first plank on the wall using the chalk line as a guide. Leave a 2.5 cm gap at the bottom and a 5 mm gap along the edge of the wall.
- Secure the plank with brad nails on the top and bottom of each plank. You will cover them with trims later.
- For the second column, apply silicone adhesive in the same way as the first. Then, align the plank next to the installed one. Angle the groove over the tongue of the previous plank and lock it into place. Tighten as needed using a tapping block or a pull bar.
- Continue installing the rest of the planks in the same way.
Add Finishing Touches
- Install a chair rail on top of the planks (for vertical installation only)
- Put quarter rounds on the inside corners.
- Reinstall any trim or skirting boards at the bottom of the wall.
