What is Hybrid Flooring

Hybrid flooring is a rigid floating floor product that can be installed over a flat, level and dry subfloor without nails or glue. It has a multi-layered structure consisting of:

  • A protective layer that provides scratch and stain resistance and UV protection
  • A decorative layer that mimics the look of natural materials such as wood or stone
  • A core layer that is made of blends of plastic and natural materials such as wood or stone
  • A backing layer that provides stability, comfort and sound insulation

Types of Hybrid Flooring

Hybrid flooring comes in two main types based on the core layer composition: Stone Plastic Composite (SPC) and Wood Plastic Composite (WPC).

SPC hybrid floors are made of limestone and PVC, making them durable and solid underfoot. They are also resistant to dents and impact damage.

WPC hybrid floors are made of recycled wood and PVC, which makes them softer and better at reducing noise transmission.

Benefits of Hybrid Flooring

Hybrid flooring has many benefits over other flooring options, such as:

Durability

Hybrid flooring is designed to withstand everyday wear and tear. It is resistant to scratches, stains, dents, fading and moisture.

Ease of installation

Hybrid flooring typically has a click-lock system that snaps the planks together and can be laid over most existing floors.

Maintenance

Hybrid flooring is easy to clean and maintain with regular sweeping or vacuuming and occasional damp mopping with a mild cleaner. It doesn’t require waxing, polishing, or sealing.

Affordability

Hybrid flooring can give you the look of timber at more affordable prices.

Aesthetics

Hybrid flooring offers a wide range of colours, styles and designs to suit any taste and decor. It can replicate the natural beauty of wood with realistic textures and patterns.

How to Choose the Best Hybrid Flooring for Your Home?

Consider the following factors when choosing a hybrid flooring for your home:

Quality

Not all hybrid flooring products are created equal. Look for reputable brands that offer high-quality materials and are backed by warranties. Check the specifications of the product, such as the thickness, the type of wear layer, the core type, the backing type, and the locking system.

Style

Choose a style that matches your personal preferences and complements your existing furniture and accessories. Consider the size and shape of the room and the amount of natural light available. For example, lighter colours may make a small space look bigger and brighter, while darker colours may add warmth and cosiness.

Budget

Compare the prices of different hybrid products and choose one that fits your budget without compromising quality. Factor in the cost of installation when calculating your expenses.

How to Install Hybrid Flooring

Installing hybrid flooring is relatively easy but requires some preparation and tools. Here are the basic steps to follow:

Preparation

Remove the old skirting before installation. Omit this step if installing scotia.

The floor should be dry, flat, level, and smooth before installing hybrid flooring.

Hybrid flooring can be installed over existing hard flooring. Carpets must be removed before installation.

Concrete subfloors must be less than 80% rh when tested in accordance with AS1884-2021. Wood subfloors must be below 14% moisture content. Otherwise, a continuous damp-proof must be installed before laying down the hybrid floors.

Make sure that the subfloor or existing floor is level. Smooth out any unevenness greater than 2mm over a length of 1 meter or 1mm over a length of 20cm. Fill grout lines wider than 3mm and deeper than 2mm.

Ensure that the surface is clean and free from debris.

Measure the floor area and calculate how many square metres of planks you will need. Add 10% extra for wastage and cutting.

Acclimatise the hybrid flooring in the room where it will be installed for at least 24 hours or according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.

Installation

Gather the tools and materials you need, such as a tape measure, pencil, utility knife, hammer, a saw, spacers, hooks or offcuts, transition strips or scotia, and safety goggles and gloves.

For best results, sort through the packs and separate the patterns for a better layout. This way, you do not end up with too many identical patterns next to each other. Check also for damaged boards.

To ensure that the last row of planks is not too narrow, plan a precise layout that creates a balanced floor appearance. If the width of the last row is less than 40mm, cut down the planks of the first row in length to make the installation process easier.

For the best visual effects, fit the floorboards in the direction of the longest wall and stagger the placements of the boards. Start from one corner of the room and work your way across.

Saw off the tongue on both the long and the short sides of the plank if using a whole plank. Place the sawn-off side of the plank against the wall and put a spacer between the wall and the plank. There should be a 10mm gap around the room’s perimeter to allow for expansion.

Attach the next plank by placing it next to the short end of the first. Align the tongue and groove and press them together. Continue this process until you reach the end of the row. Cut the last plank to fit if necessary.

Install the remaining rows. Start the second row with half a plank or a different length of the first row to create a staggered pattern. Make sure to place spacers along the wall perimeter.

Angle the plank for the second row slightly into the first row, then snap it into place. Use a tapping block and a rubber mallet to gently tap the planks together if needed. Repeat the process until you cover the entire floor.

Finishing

Remove all the spacers and install the scotia or skirting board against the wall (not to the floor).

What is the difference between hybrid and vinyl flooring?

Vinyl flooring is a type of flexible flooring made from a combination of PVC and plasticisers. It is generally thinner and softer in texture compared to hybrid flooring.
