Luxury vinyl planks and tiles are a favourite for busy homes, rental properties and commercial spaces because they handle daily wear, feel comfortable underfoot and are easy to keep looking great. Love the look of timber or stone but want something that fits real life? Vinyl planks are a smart option.

Unlike sheet vinyl, vinyl plank flooring is installed in individual planks or tiles. That makes it easier to get a neat finish around edges and fixtures, and it can also make repairs simpler if a section is ever damaged, depending on the product and how it’s installed.

Vinyl plank flooring is a durable, low-maintenance floor that gives you a realistic timber-look or stone-look finish. Vinyl planks are made in layers: a tough, clear surface that helps resist scuffs, a design layer that creates the look, and a supportive base that helps the floor feel stable and comfortable underfoot.

With modern printing and embossing, today’s vinyl planks capture the character of natural materials with impressive realism. You get the style you want, with a floor designed to handle everyday scuffs, bumps and traffic.

Not all vinyl planks perform the same. Some are thicker, quieter, or more scratch-resistant than others, so it’s worth choosing a range that suits how the room will be used, especially in high-traffic areas. At Carpet One, we offer a wide range of vinyl plank styles in timber and stone designs, so you can find the right match for your space, lifestyle and budget.

Why Homeowners Love Vinyl Plank Flooring

Vinyl planks are popular because they combine a realistic look with everyday practicality. They’re comfortable underfoot, generally quieter than harder surfaces, and simple to maintain. Many ranges are designed to resist scuffs and scratches, which makes vinyl planks a reliable choice for family homes, pets, rentals and commercial spaces where the floor needs to keep up with daily life.

Choosing Vinyl Plank Flooring

Start with how the room will be used. Busy areas typically benefit from a stronger wear layer for better scuff and scratch resistance. If you’re flooring a larger open-plan area, it’s worth considering a range and installation option that will stay stable long-term.

Comfort and noise can also matter, especially in multi-level homes or apartments. And with so many timber and stone looks available, you can choose a style that suits your interior, whether you prefer a light coastal feel, warm natural tones or a clean, modern stone finish.

If you’d like help comparing a few options, your Carpet One team can talk you through the ranges and what tends to suit each room.

Care and Maintenance

Vinyl plank flooring is easy to care for. Sweep or vacuum regularly using a hard-floor setting, then damp mop as needed with a vinyl-safe cleaner approved by the manufacturer. Avoid harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners that may dull or damage the finish.

Steam mops are not recommended for vinyl plank flooring. Heat and moisture can affect flooring systems and may weaken adhesives over time, particularly with glue-down installations.
A few small habits will help your floor stay looking its best:

  • Use entrance mats to reduce tracked-in grit
  • Fit non-staining protectors under heavy furniture
  • Lift heavy furniture rather than dragging it
  • Use curtains, blinds or UV-blocking window film to help minimise fading over time.

Always refer to the manufacturer’s care and maintenance guide for product-specific advice.

Installing Vinyl Plank Flooring

Vinyl plank flooring can be installed in different ways depending on the product, the subfloor and the needs of the space. The most common are glue-down (direct stick) and loose lay systems. Some ranges are also available in click-lock floating options.

Glue-down is often chosen for larger open-plan areas, high-traffic homes and commercial spaces. Because the planks are fully bonded to the subfloor, it can deliver excellent stability and a secure, long-lasting finish when the surface is properly prepared.

Before installation begins, check the planks under good lighting to confirm the colour and batch, and that there are no visible defects. It’s much easier to fix a problem before anything is laid.

Subfloor preparation is the make-or-break step. The surface needs to be firm, smooth, clean, dry, and level, and moisture may need to be tested, especially on concrete. If moisture is too high, a suitable moisture barrier system may be required.

Most vinyl planks also need time to acclimatise in the room before they’re installed, and it helps to manage direct sunlight during this period (window coverings are usually enough).

If you’re thinking of installing vinyl planks yourself, it’s worth getting advice before you start. Vinyl can look straightforward, but prep requirements are easy to miss, and those details can affect the finish and warranty.

Vinyl Plank FAQs

Vinyl plank flooring is loved for its affordability, style variety, and easy maintenance. Like any material, it has a few things to consider. You may need it to be professionally installed for the best results. While it’s a strong choice for many households, there are other flooring options like engineered timber and hybrid flooring that may offer greater longevity. Depending on the quality of the product, vinyl planks may be prone to scratching and denting from heavy furniture or from objects being dragged across the surface, but this can be minimised with proper care and protection of your flooring.
