A flooring story with Geelong roots

Godfrey Hirst’s connection to Australian manufacturing reaches back to Geelong in 1865, when the Victorian Woollen and Cloth Manufacturing Company was established as one of Victoria’s early textile mills.

Godfrey Hirst later began his own manufacturing venture in 1888, helping lay the foundations for a flooring name that has remained closely associated with Geelong ever since.

Today, the company produces thousands of metres of carpet at facilities across Australia and New Zealand, supported by yarn processing, distribution and sales operations throughout both countries.

One range across soft and hard flooring

Godfrey Hirst is best known for carpet, but its collection now extends across many of the main flooring categories used in Australian homes.

Carpet choices include wool, triexta, solution dyed nylon, DuraTuft polyester, polyester and polypropylene. The hard flooring range covers engineered timber, hybrid, laminate and vinyl plank.

This breadth makes it possible to explore different surfaces for different parts of the home while keeping colour, style and practical requirements in mind.

A family might choose carpet for bedrooms and quieter retreats, for example, then carry a complementary timber look through living, dining and kitchen areas.

Hycraft wool carpet

Hycraft by Godfrey Hirst brings the natural qualities of wool into a dedicated collection of carpet styles and colours.

Wool’s natural crimp holds small pockets of air within the fibre, helping insulate a room throughout the year. Its colour variation and texture also give the finished carpet a depth that comes from using a natural material.

Hycraft includes understated designs as well as more heavily textured options, allowing wool carpet to work across traditional, contemporary and relaxed Australian interiors.

Hard flooring with a different character

Godfrey Hirst’s hard flooring collection provides several ways to introduce timber and stone-inspired finishes into the home.

Engineered timber has a genuine hardwood surface, so natural grain, colour changes and variation appear across the boards. Its layered construction is designed to provide greater stability than traditional solid timber.

Hybrid flooring uses a rigid layered construction and is available in timber and selected stone looks. Laminate recreates timber through a durable decorative surface over a high-density core, while vinyl plank offers a lower-profile flooring format with textured designs that imitate natural timber.

Some ranges also introduce longer boards, parquet layouts and stone-inspired tiles, creating options beyond a standard timber plank appearance.

Made locally, chosen locally

Godfrey Hirst continues to manufacture wool, synthetic and triexta carpet in Australia and New Zealand, with thousands of metres produced through its local facilities.

Carpet One stores bring their own local knowledge to that manufacturing experience. Our flooring experts can help you see how samples respond to the light, colours and finishes already present in your home rather than choosing from a screen alone.

Why Carpet One works with Godfrey Hirst

Godfrey Hirst gives our stores access to both carpet and hard flooring under one established flooring name.

That range allows customers to compare natural and synthetic carpet fibres, genuine timber surfaces and practical timber-look alternatives without approaching each room as a completely separate decision.

Carpet One can help bring those choices together into a flooring plan that suits the home as a whole.
