Plantation shutters are panels of adjustable louvres fitted to your window. Tilt the louvres to let in light and air, close them for privacy, or swing the panels open for a clear view. They suit modern and traditional homes, need little more than a dust to keep clean, and are built to last for many years.

Your local Carpet One store can help you choose the right material for each room and give you a Total Installed Price, so you know the full cost before you decide.

Their timeless look works just as well in modern spaces as it does in traditional homes. With their sturdy build, low maintenance, versatility, and lasting quality, shutters are a smart and stylish investment for your home.

Which shutter material is right for you?

Each material has its own look, price and best place in the home. Here’s a quick guide.

Timber Shutters

Look: real wood grain, painted or stained to suit your décor.

Best for: living rooms, bedrooms and other dry rooms.

Price: mid to high.

Good to know: timber can be refinished later if you want a new colour.

Wood composite shutters

Look: a smooth painted finish that looks like timber.

Best for: most dry rooms, including sunny rooms where you want a finish that won’t warp or sag.

Price: lower to mid.

Good to know: a strong engineered core with a protective coating, so they hold their shape well.

PVC and polymer shutters

Look: a clean painted finish, usually in shades of white.

Best for: bathrooms, laundries, kitchens and humid areas.

Price: usually the most affordable.

Good to know: they’re made to handle moisture, so they won’t swell, peel or crack in wet rooms.

Aluminium shutters

Look: slim, modern lines in a range of colours.

Best for: alfresco areas, patios, outdoor rooms and wet areas.

Price: usually the highest.

Good to know: strong and weather resistant, so they can be used inside or out.

Not sure? Many homes mix materials, for example timber in the living room and PVC in the bathroom. Your local store can help you plan each room.

Styles and Options

Shutters come in a range of materials and styles, so you can choose the right fit for your space.

If you’re looking for a timeless, elegant appearance, timber shutters could be just what you need. They bring warmth and natural beauty to your home, and they’re built to last for many years with proper upkeep.

Painted or stained finishes let you match your shutters to your décor: crisp whites for a fresh look, darker tones for depth and sophistication. Plus, if they ever need a refresh or restoration, they can be refinished to give them a new look.

For bathrooms, laundries or humid climates, choose moisture-resistant shutters made from PVC, polymer or aluminium. You’ll also find them in different colours and finishes to match your interiors.

The size of the louvres changes the feel too: wider louvres, like in plantation shutters, create a contemporary look and let in more light, while narrower louvres feel more traditional and refined.

There are a few ways your shutters can work with your windows. Full-height shutters cover the entire window for a clean, simple look. For something a bit different, café-style shutters cover just the lower half, giving you privacy at street level while still letting light in from above.

For more flexibility, choose tier-on-tier shutters. They come in two separate panels, one for the top and one for the bottom, so you can open or close each section on its own. Let bright daylight in from the top while keeping things private below, or close the whole window when you want more privacy.

Shutters can be permanently fixed or opened fully, depending on how you want to use the window.

A common design is the hinged shutter, which is usually installed with hinges on the side frames and opens inward, much like a traditional door. This classic design is simple and gives full access to the window.

If space is tight, bifold shutters are a good choice. They’re made up of several panels hinged together that fold neatly to one or both sides of the window, so they need much less room than hinged shutters, which have to swing open.

For wide windows or patio doors, sliding shutters work well. Like sliding doors, the panels run on a track and slide past each other, so there’s no swing space needed and you have full control of light and privacy across large openings.

How much do plantation shutters cost?

As a rough guide, plantation shutters in Australia are commonly priced at around $300 to $800 per square metre installed. PVC and polymer shutters usually sit at the lower end, while timber and aluminium cost more. Large doors, bay windows and unusual shapes can cost more again.

Your price depends on the size and number of windows, the material, the louvre size, the frame and how the panels open (hinged, bifold or sliding). Your local Carpet One store will measure your windows and give you a Total Installed Price, so there are no surprises.

Shutters FAQs

Plantation shutters are the most popular type of indoor shutter, recognised by their wide louvres that create a clean, modern look. Traditional shutters, by contrast, have narrower louvres and a more detailed, classic appearance. In practice, though, most people use “plantation shutters” as a catch-all term for all interior shutters, regardless of style.
